Sedation Dentistry
San Antonio, Texas

At Oak Creek Endodontics, we understand that some patients may feel anxious when it comes to endodontic procedures such as root canal therapy. Whether you have a strong gag reflex, tooth sensitivity, trouble getting numb, or past traumatic dental experiences, we believe no one should avoid care because of fear. We are pleased to offer sedation dentistry options to take the edge off endodontic treatments, helping ensure your time with us is positive and free from stress.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the use of sedative medications to reduce anxiety during endodontic procedures. At Oak Creek Endodontics, we offer a range of conscious sedation options, including the following:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative we administer mixed with oxygen through a small mask placed over your nose. It takes effect almost immediately, creating a sense of euphoria and calm, and helping ease dental anxiety. You will remain fully awake and able to communicate with our team throughout your visit.

Once we complete your procedure and remove your mask, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off almost immediately. You will be fully alert and able to drive yourself home or return to your workday right after your appointment, minimizing your downtime and recovery time.

Oral Conscious Sedation: Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication shortly before treatment, helping you feel completely calm and relaxed. This form of sedation can be ideal for patients with moderate dental anxiety or for those undergoing lengthy or complex treatments, easing their tension. You may feel drowsy, but you will remain conscious and able to respond to our team.

Oral sedation often produces an "amnesic effect," meaning you may have little to no memory of the sights, sounds, or sensations during treatment, helping lessen fear of future dental treatments. It is important to note that the medication remains in your system for several hours after your visit, which is why we require a trusted adult to accompany you and drive you to and from our office. You should plan to spend the remainder of the day resting at home while the sedative effects fully subside.

Level II IV Sedation: For patients who require deeper relaxation, we offer Level II IV sedation upon request. This service is administered in our office by an outside professional who is trained and licensed in this form of sedation, ensuring your safety and well-being at every step.

Who Is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is not only for patients with severe dental anxiety. It can also be helpful for those with tooth sensitivity, difficulty sitting still for long, strong jaw fatigue, or patients requiring lengthy or complex endodontic treatments. Some patients opt for sedation simply because they want a calmer, more comfortable experience.
