Regenerative Endodontics
San Antonio, Texas

Is your child or teen battling a tooth infection? Or has trauma affected the inner pulp? Traditional endodontic treatment may not always be the ideal solution for treating disease or trauma in developing teeth. At Oak Creek Endodontics, we offer regenerative endodontic procedures designed to support the body’s healing processes, helping maintain natural tooth development. This biologic approach focuses on preserving vitality, encouraging root growth, and protecting the long-term health of young smiles.

What Is Regenerative Endodontics?

Regenerative endodontics draws on a child or teen’s natural healing power to facilitate the regeneration of damaged pulp and root tissues. When infection affects an immature tooth, the root may be short, thin, or incompletely formed. Traditional root canal treatments can stop infection, but do not allow the root to continue developing. Regenerative endodontics is an innovative approach that enables immature permanent teeth to continue developing, promoting natural and healthy tooth growth.

Regenerative endodontics helps remove the infection at its source, encouraging the body’s stem cells to promote continued root growth and thickening. The goal is to preserve natural teeth, which is always the best possible outcome for young smiles.

What Are the Different Regenerative Endodontic Treatments Offered?

The following are the regenerative procedures we offer here at Oak Creek Endodontics:

Vital Pulp Therapy: Vital Pulp Therapy can be ideal for immature permanent teeth with pulp affected by trauma, decay, or infection, but the root is not yet fully formed. During treatment, we will carefully remove any infected or damaged pulp tissue and fill the root canals with a medicated gel to prevent reinfection and stabilize the affected tooth.

After about a week, we will gently induce bleeding at the tip of the root, known as its apex. The blood clot that forms acts as a scaffold, promoting natural stem cell growth and nerve and tissue regeneration. The last step is to place a bioceramic seal, which helps the body naturally regenerate healthy tissue over time. This regenerative technique helps eliminate infection while preserving the tooth’s ability to grow and mature.

Pulp Capping: There are two forms of pulp capping: direct and indirect. Direct pulp capping is performed when deep decay or injury has exposed a tooth’s nerves. It involves placing protective material directly over your child or teen’s exposed pulp to help stimulate the body’s natural healing response, and preserving the tooth’s vitality without the need for a full root canal treatment.

Indirect pulp capping, on the other hand, can be ideal for treating decay close to the tooth’s nerve but hasn’t yet exposed it. It involves removing the damaged tooth structure and placing a protective layer to shield the pulp tissue, encouraging the tooth to remineralize and heal itself from within. Direct and indirect pulp capping can both avoid root canal treatment, helping save a tooth’s nerve rather than removing it.

Who Is a Candidate for Regenerative Endodontic Treatment?

Regenerative endodontics is designed to address immature teeth affected by infection or trauma in young patients aged 7 to 18. These treatments are not ideal for adult teeth that have fully developed. Our skilled endodontist at Oak Creek Endodontics will evaluate your child's or teen's specific needs and recommend the most conservative solution to restore their smile's health and function.
